Pharmacology/ Pharmacokinetics
Drug Interaction:
CNS depressants- propiomazine enhances the CNS effects. Eliminate or reduce the dose of barbiturate by at least in the presence of propiomazine. Reduce the dose of mepiridine, morphine and other analgesic depressants by 1/4 to 1/2.
Adverse Reaction:
Dry mouth may occur. Moderate elevation of blood pressure. Hypotension (rare). Tachycardia
Contra-Indications:
Intra-arterial injection- arterial/arteriolar spasm with local circulation impairment may occur. Special precautions: Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) a potentially fatal symptom complex has occured in association with antipsychotic drugs. Thrombophlebitis- do not allow extravasation, since chemical irritation may be severe. Hazardous tasks- observe caution

Dosage:
Adults- administer IM or IV 20mg propiomazine with 50mg meperidine. Some may require 40mg for adequate sedation

PROPIOMAZINE - Systemic
1.Allergies-
Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to
propiomazine or any other phenothiazine( eg acetophenazine, chlorpromazine
fluphenazine etc.). Also tell your healthcare care professional if you are allergic
to any other substances such as foods. preservatives or dyes.
2.Pregnancy-
Propiomazine has not been shown to cause problems in pregnant women.
3. Breast-feeding-
Propiomazine has not been shown to reported to cause problems in nursing
babies.
4.Children-
Although there is no specific information comparing use of propiomazine
in children with use in other age groups, this medicine is not expected to
cause different side effects or problems than it does in adults.
5.Older adults-
There is no specific information comparing use of propiomazine in the elderly
with use in other age groups
6. Other medicines-
Tell your doctor if you are using any of the following medicines-
CNS system depressants- that cause drowsiness or
Tricyclic antideprssants - taking these medicines with propiomazine
will cause an increase in CNS depressant effects
Pharmacology/ Pharmacokinetics:
Pharmacology: The phenothiazine compound with sedative, antiemetic and antihistaminic properties is a potent premedicant, with a short duration of action.
Pharmacokinetics: Following IM administration,peak serum concentrations are reached in 1 to 3 hours, mean bioavailability is 60%.
