Dosage:
Sedative
Adults: 32 to 100 mg 3 to 4 times a day. Optimum use 50 mg 3 or 4 times/day
Children: 16 to 32 mg 3 to 4 times a day.
Epilepsy
Adults- average dose is 400 to 600mg daily
Children- less than 5 years- 16 to 32mg 3 to 4 times per day.
Children more than 5 years- 32 to 64mg 3 to 4 times per day.
Replacement therapy-
Start with a small dose and gradually increase overr 4 to 5 days until opyimum dose is determined
If the patient has been taking another antilepticc drug, gradually reduce the dosage of other drug
as the doses of mephobarbital are increased to guard against temporary marked attacks that may
occur when treatment of epilepsy is changed abruptly
Combination drug therapy-
may be used in combination with phenobarbital, in alternating courses or concurrently.
When the ywo are used at the same time, the dose shouldbe about one-half the amount of each used alone
The average daily dose for an adult is from 50 to 100mg phenobarbital and from 200 to 300mgmephobarbital
