INSULIN GLARINE-
A German Study of 1.27,000 diabetic patients has found that those who use Lantus are at
an increased rate of developing cancer compared to others who use human insulin
Out of every 100 patients who use Lantus over a period of 18 months , one additional person
may suffer from malignancy . The risk is dose dependent , higher the dose higher the risk of
cancer.
Patients who receive 10 units have 9% increased risk compared to 31% when the dose is increased
to 50 units - ( MIMS )
Adverse Reaction:
Hypoglycaemia, temporary visual impairment
Injection site reactions including lipodstrophy,
Priritus, rash,
Possibility of increased risk of cancer
Sports events- restricted /banned
Contra-Indications:
Hypersensitivity to insulins
Special precautions/Warnings-
Patients transferred to human insulin should be adviced that the early warning symtoms
of hypoglycemia may be less pronounced than with insulins from an animal source
Change in strength, brand, type, origin and or method of manufacture may require
change in dosage.
Dose changes may be required with infectin, stress, excercise , trauma, surgery,
and at puberty
Renal or hepatic impairment,
Not the insulin of choice in diabetic ketoacidosis
Pregnancy, lactation

Dosage according to requirement . Duration approximately 24 hours .
Not recommended for children below 6 years.
