Drug Interaction:
Mineral oils- Surfactants(ie docustae) may facilitate absorption, thus increasing the toxicity of mineral oil.
Milk or antacids- Concomitant admin of bisacodyl tablets may cause the enteric coating to dissolve, resulting in gastric lining irritation or dyspepsia.
Lipid soluble vitamins(Vitamin A, D, E, and K); absorption may decrease during prolonged administration with mineral oil
Tetracycline: Laxatives containing aluminium, calcium, or magnesium, (ie.polycarbophil) impair absorption of tetracycline, due to release of free calcium.
Indication:
Symptomatic relief of constipation
Drug interactions - summary

Adverse Reaction:
Excessive bowel activity (griping, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting); perianal irritation, weakness, dizziness, fainting, palpitations, sweating, bloating, flatulance. Abdominal cramps have occured.
Esophageal, gastric, small intestinal and rectal obstruction due to accumulation of mucilaginous components of bulk laxatives have occured. Large doses of mineral oil may cause anal seepage, resulting in itching( pruritis ani) irritation, hemorrhoids and perianal discomfort. Basacodyl suppositories may cause proctitis and inflammation. Not recommended for long term use.
Contra-Indications:
Hypersensitivity to any ingredient; nausea, vomiting, or other symptoms of appendicitis, acute surgical abdomen, fecal impaction, intesinal obstruction, undiagnosed abdominal pain. Do not use bisacodyl tannex in patients with ulcerative lesions of the colon or in children below 10 years old.
Do not give docustate sodium if mineral oil is being given. Special precautions: Rectal bleeding or failure to respond to therapy may indicate a serious condition which may require further medical attention.
Phenophyhlein may cause a skin hypersensitivity characterized by a fixed drug eruption. Discontinue the drug if this occurs. Discoloration of acid urine to yellowish brown may occur with cascara sagrada or senna.
Pink-red,red-violet or red-brown discoluration of alkaline urine may occur with phenophthlein, cascara sagrada or senna. Some of the products contain tartrazine, which may cause allergic-type reactions in suseceptible patients
Patient Information:
REFER BISACODYL LAXATIVES
1. Direct attention to proper dietary intake, adequate fluids and regular excercise.
2. Do not use in presence of abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting.
3. Laxative use is only a temporary measure, do not use longer than 1 week. When regularity returns, discontinue use. Prolonged, frequent or excessive use may result in dependence or electrolyte imbalance.
4. Notify physician, if unrelieved constipation, rectal bleeding or symproms of electrolyte imbalance occurs.
5. Pink-red, red-violet or red-brown discoluration of alkaline urine may occur with cascara sagrada, phenolphthlein or senna.
6. Take with a full glass of water or juice.
7. Mineral oil- preferably administered on an empty stomach
8. Bisacodyl tablets- swallow whole; do not take within 1 hour of antacids or milk.
